Knitalongs and buggy mitts

So it's a go- I am now part of a knitalong- the pinwheel sweater one, hosted by Anny Purls. I have no idea how to get the buttons and make the columns and anything else like that (I operate on a need to know basis- if I didn't need to know something- out it goes) Anyone out there can help me? Let me know in the comments and I will get back to you-

Gotta go and help my pooch- the thunder just started, and he is on his way to panic mode.........
Edit- crisis averted- the dog is fine- only one clap of thunder. My physio wants me to take it very easy- no exercises at all this week, minimal everything. Blah. I'm getting bored.
